Below you will find some examples of questions that have been submitted.

Question: I'm using DHCP in my Windows network to hand out IP addresses in the 192.168.1.0/24 network range. Why do some Windows workstations receive an IP address in the range 169.254.0.1 - 169.254.255.254?

Answer: Microsoft assigns its operating systems a default IP address in the network range 169.254.0.1 - 169.254.255.254 if the operating system is configured for DHCP and a DHCP server can't be reached. Check to make sure your Windows workstation has network connectivity to the DHCP servers. If a router is between the workstation and the DHCP server make sure the router is configured to forward DHCP requests.

Question: Our organization's remote access solution uses the Cisco VPN client terminating to a PIX firewall. Authentication is achieved with a vpngroup name and password. Do you recommend using two factor (dual) authentication instead?

Answer: In almost every situation we recommend two factor (dual) authentication. Since the vpngroup name and password are stored locally on the remote machine, for example a laptop, you risk the threat of the laptop being stolen and the perpetrator gaining access to your network by simply opening up the VPN dialer. Using dual authentication will require that not only the vpngroup name and password be used but also a username and password, for example, to the Windows domain must be entered. Keep in mind that although dual authentication is more secure it should revolve around a solid security policy.
